Dollz — By Year
Dollz are arranged based on estimations of the year they were created as inferred by the dates on the archived webpages the graphics were found on. Therefore, a doll listed as belonging to the 2001 – 2003 group may have actually been made in 1999, but the earliest available archive date was in 2001.
The most prolific doll style (hands behind back, or the ‘prep’ style) began as avatars for an online chat program, ‘Palace’.
However, the creation of custom dolls by users known as ‘dollmakers’ or ‘dollers’ either predates or was concurrent to Palace, as evidenced by the large body of work that is not consistent with the prep doll base. Dollz were important to the early internet because of their small data size, which allowed for reduced loading times, their ability to be customized without expensive software, and their usage as, most likely, the first visual expressions and representations of online users’ physical bodies, albeit very often extremely idealized.
As ‘dolling’ became more popular and accessible, doll styles began to be named after their bases.
